Beef Bulgogi

Paper-thin slices of beef are marinated with soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and onion, then seared quickly over high heat and served with rice and lettuce. Grated Asian pear, often used to tenderize the marinade, is omitted because it is not a canonical ingredient.

- 2 tbspToasted sesame oilBuy 1 bottle
- ¼ tspGround black pepperBuy 1 jar
- ½Yellow onionthinly slicedBuy 0.16 lb
- 3 stalksGreen onions (scallions)cut into 5 cm lengthsBuy 1 bunch
- 1 tbspVegetable oilfor the panBuy 1 bottle

Method
Mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and pepper; toss with the beef, onion, and green onions and marinate for 30 minutes.
Cook the rice according to its package directions.
Heat a large skillet until very hot, add the oil, and sear the beef in batches in a single layer until caramelized at the edges, 2 to 3 minutes.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with rice and lettuce leaves if using.
